Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin is seeking a physician assistant to join their team. The group as a whole consists of 21 physicians and 16 physician extenders. This particular position would be working within a smaller team of 2 orthopaedic surgeons and 2 other physician assistants. Surgeons specialize primarily in hip, knee, and shoulder joint reconstruction as well as some arthroscopic procedures and trauma.
Job Responsibilities and Duties:
The duties of the Physician Assistant will fall within the scope of practice as a Physician’s Assistant as described by the Wisconsin State Medical Examining Board. This position involves a mix of clinical and surgical duties. These duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Assist in the office practice of Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin, where requested, to evaluate and manage acute and chronic orthopaedic conditions involving the hip, knee, and shoulder.
Assesses patient health by interviewing patients, performing physical examinations, developing and implementing patient management plans.
Documents patient care in EPIC.
Orders and interprets diagnostic tests including x-rays, MRI, and laboratory studies.
Recommends, prescribes and monitors pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies including controlled substances as appropriate for patient specific conditions.
Performs therapeutic procedures by administering injections; suturing; managing wounds and infections.
Instructs and counsels patients by describing therapeutic regimens, promoting wellness and health maintenance. Prepares patients for surgery including discussion of procedure, expected recovery, risks, and alternatives.
First assist in surgery to perform all tasks as directed by the supervisory physician.
Completes hospital evaluations including admission histories and physicals, inpatient progress notes, discharge summaries, and inpatient consultations.
On call duties include answering patient phone calls, answering hospital phone calls pertaining to Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin inpatients, performing new inpatient orthopedic consultations, and first assisting in surgery for procedures as required. Weekend call also involves performing inpatient rounds on current inpatients for the group.
The duties of the employee will be performed primarily at Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin, Waukesha Memorial, Hospital, Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital, and The Orthopaedic Surgery Center. Travel is required between office locations of Pewaukee, Mukwonago, and Brookfield. In the event the employer established other offices or practices in other locations, the employee agrees to work at these locations when assigned.
Schedule:
Hours are generally Monday-Friday during core business hours. Some flexibility is required for on call requirements and surgical schedule.
On-call coverage for this role would involve approximately 2-3 weekends per year, 1 holiday per year, and 1-2 weekdays per month on average. An appropriate level of medical supervision will be provided at all times when Employee is asked to perform the duties as outlines herein.
Education, Certificate, and Licensures:
- Graduation from an accredited Physician’s Assistant program.
- Certification from the National Commission on Certification of
Physician’s Assistants. - State of Wisconsin Physician Assistant Licensure.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Prefer 2-3 years experience working as a physician assistant.
- Knowledge of the professional medical practice and care to give and evaluate patient care.
- Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations, and procedures to administer patient care.
- Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
- Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of medicine to provide ongoing patient care.
- Skill in taking medical history, assessing medical condition, and interpreting findings.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
- Ability to maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Ability to protect patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
- Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
