Surgical Associate in Cardiac Surgery
Department: Mass General Brigham Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI), Cardiac Surgery
Division Reports To: Chief of Cardiac Surgery, Mass General Brigham
The Division of Cardiac Surgery within the Heart and Vascular Institute at Mass General Brigham is seeking a full-time Surgical Associate who is board certified or board eligible in Cardiac Surgery or possesses the foreign equivalent. Mass General Brigham is a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School with clinical activities spanning Massachusetts General Hospital (Fruit Street Campus) and Brigham and Women's Hospital (Francis Street Campus).
The successful candidate will play a key role in the Division's thoracic organ procurement program and multidisciplinary cardiogenic shock program. Primary responsibilities will include participation in regional and national heart and lung donor procurement, including donation after circulatory death (DCD) procurement techniques, and the evaluation and preservation of thoracic donor organs. The candidate will also participate in the multidisciplinary Shock Team, providing expertise in the implantation, management, and explanation of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and temporary mechanical circulatory support devices, including Impella, ProtekDuo, and other contemporary support platforms.
Additional clinical responsibilities may include participation in the care of patients undergoing heart transplantation, durable mechanical circulatory support, and other complex cardiac surgical procedures, depending upon the candidate's experience and interests.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent technical skills, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to function effectively within multidisciplinary teams. A commitment to patient safety, teamwork, professionalism, and collaboration across Mass General Brigham campuses is essential. Candidates should also demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching medical students, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, and other members of the multidisciplinary care team.
An interest in clinical research, quality improvement, organ preservation, transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, or cardiogenic shock is desirable. Opportunities for academic development, scholarly activity, and appointment at Harvard Medical School will be available and commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience. The candidate should be qualified to be appointed at the Instructor or Assistant Professor level at Harvard Medical School.
Salary and academic appointment will be commensurate with training and level of experience.
